CALYX · EST. 2016 The Calyx story

Ten years of packaging, pressed into an operating system.

PackOS wasn't designed in a strategy deck. It was learned — one container, one press run, one launch day at a time. This is the decade that taught us what packaging software has to know.

2014The bottle from 1964

Every dispensary was selling the future in a pill bottle.

At business school in Boston, Simon Knobel kept turning the same object over in his hands: the push-down-and-turn bottle every dispensary used — a pharmacy design unchanged since 1964, borrowed from an industry it was never meant to leave. He dropped out to build packaging engineered for the product it actually holds.

LEARNEDBorrowed packaging never fits the product. IN PACKOSPurpose-built for packaging — not a retrofitted ERP.
2016Calyx is founded

Design the whole object — gasket, thread, radius, cube.

Calyx Containers is founded in Boston by Simon Knobel and Alex Gonzalez. The square Calyx Dram rethinks everything at once: a bi-injection cap with an integrated TPE gasket for an airtight seal, child-resistant but senior-friendly, recyclable polypropylene — and square, because cubes ship and shelve where cylinders waste space.

LEARNEDEvery spec is load-bearing — seal, thread, radius, cube. IN PACKOSThe structured packaging record: every field a first-class spec.
PLATE 01 — JAR TOOLING · FIRST PRINCIPLES
2018Market debut

The first legal sale east of the Mississippi — in a Calyx container.

The Calyx Dram and Tubes reach the market, and when Massachusetts opens its doors, the first legal cannabis sold east of the Mississippi crosses the counter in a Calyx container. Launch day teaches a lesson no spreadsheet could: demand doesn't wait for optimistic lead times.

LEARNEDLaunch day punishes optimistic lead times. IN PACKOSRoutes and lead times evaluated before you commit — not after.
2019The jar nobody would make

Every U.S. glassmaker said no. So the network got bigger.

The square-neck glass concentrate jar was told "impossible" by every American manufacturer who saw it. Calyx found a German glassmaker who said yes, then engineered a thermoformed FEP liner so nothing sticks to the cap. Reviewers called it "like holding a little jewel."

LEARNEDWhen suppliers say no, the network is the product. IN PACKOSA supplier network across Calyx, partners, and your own vendors.
2021Our own factory

Owning production means owning the feedback loop.

Calyx builds its own plant in West Valley City, Utah — injection molding, label printing, and flexible packaging under one roof, running 24-hour shifts. Product iteration collapses from months to weekly. Every constraint of a real press, a real mold, a real changeover becomes first-hand knowledge.

LEARNEDThe factory floor is the only honest teacher. IN PACKOSProduction-aware quoting built on real constraints, not catalog math.

2022CalyxFX

Print stops being decoration and becomes data.

CalyxFX brings variable print, authenticity, and anti-counterfeit tooling onto the container itself — brand storytelling that doubles as supply-chain truth. Artwork, revisions, and proofs stop being email attachments and start behaving like records.

LEARNEDArtwork is data, not decoration. IN PACKOSArtwork Intelligence — dielines, proofs, and revisions as records.
2023Scale

UNITS MANUFACTURED · RIGID / GLASS / FLEXIBLES / LABELS

Half a billion units. Dozens of regulated markets. Zero room for sloppy specs.

Named to Forbes' Cannabis 42.0, Calyx crosses half a billion units for brands like Wana, Curaleaf, Cookies, and Trulieve — across markets where every state writes different rules. At this scale, tribal knowledge breaks. Memory has to be institutional.

LEARNEDRegulated scale demands institutional memory. IN PACKOSCompliance and history live in the record — not in inboxes.
2026PackOS

The decade, pressed into software.

Everything the floor taught us — quoting that respects the press, artwork that behaves like data, suppliers as a network, lead times that tell the truth, compliance with a memory — becomes PackOS: the operating system for enterprise packaging. Launching first with Quick Quote, because that's where every packaging story begins: a file, and a price.
